My name is Eleanor McCalla, I use any pronouns, and I am a student at Drake University double-majoring in Multimedia Journalism and Environmental Science. When I got to Des Moines, I knew I wanted to find a church where I didn't feel like I had to hide any part of myself or feel ashamed about my identity. Through a religion class exploring the various faiths of Des Moines, I stumbled upon Downtown Disciples, and I immediately felt right at home. I think I cried at the first service I attended because it was such a relief to have found a place where I feel like I belong. I am a camp counselor in the summers, and it is the highlight of my every year, so when I heard about this position, I was thrilled to have an opportunity to continue to work and wonder with youth. I have found that they often teach me just as much as I teach them, and I am looking forward to this opportunity for growth and community.
